Substitution of paraverbal and nonverbal cues in the written medium of IRC

چکیده

For a long time, dialogue analysis has separated spoken language from written language. This dichotomy is valid in many cases as it is mostly parallel to the distinction of synchronous and asynchronous communication with the associated affinity to graphic and acoustic media, respectively. During the present decade, many forms of computer mediated communication (CMC) have become widespread. With Internet Relay Chat (IRC), CMC introduced the new form of synchronous, written -or rather typedmany-to-many communication. This novel constellation gives rise to several aspects that require a further differentiation of the strict dichotomy of spoken vs. written language. This paper will discuss how the total absence of paraverbal and nonverbal relational (and social) cues is fostering the evolution of a repertoire of text-based surrogates for these. Examples will also show that the planning strategies involved in the fast-paced conversations on IRC are not those usually employed for written language.

Deception and Cognitive Load: Expanding Our Horizon with a Working Memory Model

Recently, studies on deception and its detection have increased dramatically. Many of these studies rely on the "cognitive load approach" as the sole explanatory principle to understand deception. These studies have been exclusively on lies about negative actions (usually lies of suspects of [mock] crimes). Instead, we need to re-focus more generally on the cognitive processes involved in gener...

Introspective Study of Emotion Icon in Public Chat as a Gesture of Texting

An emotion icon, better known as emoticon is a metacommunicative pictorial representation of a facial expression that, in the absence of body language and prosody, serves to draw a receiver's attention to the tenor or temper of a sender's nominal verbal communication, changing and improving its interpretation. The present study investigates the use of these nonverbal cues in whatsapp public cha...

Influence of Substitution of Peat with Iranian Zeolite(Clinoptilolite) In Peat Medium on Ficus Benjamina Growth

This experiment was designed to characterize the effects of size and concentration of an Iranian clinoptilolite zeolite on the growth ofFicus benjamina (starlight) in peat base media. Ficus benjamina was stock rooted and grown in a peat consisting perlite (2: 1 v/v) (P: Pe), zeolite (10, 20, 30 and 40 v/v %, two sizes 0.5-3 mm and 3-8 mm) instead of peat in P: Pe (2: 1 v/v) media. Ficus benjami...

Chronemic Nonverbal Expectancy Violations in Written Computer Mediated Communication

Computer Mediated Communication Abstract Time related (chronemic) cues are an important component of nonverbal communication. Do they also act as nonverbal cues in computer mediated communication? 55 participants were asked to rate a job candidate described in a vignette. Candidates varied in their valence (high valence, low valence) and in their response latency to an email (normative one day ...

Isolation and optimization of mice skeletal muscle satellite cells using preplating method and culture media substitution

Introduction: Satellite cells are known as the main regenerative cell type in skeletal muscles. Our study established a modified digestion and preplating method for the isolation of slow or weak adherent cells for the enrichment of satellite cells. Low-survival rate of these primary stem cells prompted us to address whether cell culture medium substitution might change cell viability status. M...
